Each month a new book is chosen a starting point and linked to six other books to form a chain. Links can be formed in any way you want, including authors, themes, keywords, and pretty much anything.

STARTING BOOK: Postcards from the Edge by Carrie Fisher

I haven’t read Postcards from the Edge by Carrie Fisher, but according to the summary it follows an actress as she tries to overcome drug addiction. It’s supposed to be semi-autobiographical. There’s also a movie starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine based on the book.

1. Streep has been in multiple movies adapted from books. One of her recent roles was as Aunt March in Louisa May Alcottt’s Little Women. The book broke my heart when I was growing up. I loved Laurie so much. Who played Jo March? None other than the phenomenal Saoirse Ronan.

2. Saoirse Ronan is one of my favorite actresses. Her acting prowess can be seen in Brooklyn, a film adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novel of the same name. The book follows Eilis Lacey from her Irish village to Brooklyn as she carves out a life for herself, but returns to her village after tragedy strikes. Domnall Gleeson stars opposite Ronan as a potential love interest. He’s very charming in the role.

3. Gleeson shares the screen with Jude Law in Anna Karenina. The book centers on an affair between Anna and cavalry officer Vronsky. Law plays Karenin, Anna’s husband. Neither Gleeson or Law are part of my favorite scene–the dance between Anna and Vronsky–from this particular adaptation of Tolstoy’s novel.

4. Many years before Anna Karenina, Law starred in The Talented Mr. Ripley, a psychological thriller adapted from the book by Patricia Highsmith. Tom Ripley is enlisted to convince Dickie Greenleaf to return home but Ripley has other plans once becoming part of Greenleaf’s circle of friends. Cate Blanchett stars in a supporting role.

5. Blanchett is unforgettable as Lady Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings. Her voice is haunting as she narrates the opening scenes. The book is an epic high fantasy that follows several individuals trying to save Middle Earth from domination by Dark Lord Sauron by destroying “the one ring.” Sean Bean as Boromir learns too late of the dangers it brings.

6. Bean helps wrap up this month’s #6Degrees with his co-starring role in the adaptation of Tom Clancy’s Patriot Games. The novel is a thriller about ex-Marine and CIA analyst Jack Ryan who saves royals from a terrorist attack. His family becomes the target of the enemies he makes from the incident. Who plays Jack Ryan in the 1992 adaptation? Harrison Ford.

ENDING BOOK: Patriot Games by Tom Clancy

It’s difficult to think of Carrie Fisher without also invoking Star Wars. As many know, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher star in the original trilogy (Episodes 4-6). With that, our loop is complete. It was both fun and difficult looking for co-star links with movie adaptations of books. Thank goodness for Domnall Gleeson and Cate Blanchett!
