Six Degrees of Separation: August 2021

HOW IT WORKS:
Six Degrees of Separation is a meme that began with Annabel Smith and Emma Chapman and has been hosted by Kate over at Books Are My Favourite and Best since 2016. Each month a new book is chosen a starting point and linked to six other books to form a chain. Links can be formed in any way you want, including authors, themes, keywords, and pretty much anything.

Join in by posting your own six degrees chain on your blog and adding the link in the Linky section (or comments) of each monthโ€™s post. If you donโ€™t have a blog, you can share your chain in the comments section. You can also check out links to posts on Twitter using the hashtag #6Degrees

STARTING BOOK: Postcards from the Edge by Carrie Fisher

I haven’t read Postcards from the Edge by Carrie Fisher, but according to the summary it follows an actress as she tries to overcome drug addiction. It’s supposed to be semi-autobiographical. There’s also a movie starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine based on the book.

1. Streep has been in multiple movies adapted from books. One of her recent roles was as Aunt March in Louisa May Alcottt’s Little Women. The book broke my heart when I was growing up. I loved Laurie so much. Who played Jo March? None other than the phenomenal Saoirse Ronan.

2. Saoirse Ronan is one of my favorite actresses. Her acting prowess can be seen in Brooklyn, a film adaptation of Colm Tรณibรญn’s novel of the same name. The book follows Eilis Lacey from her Irish village to Brooklyn as she carves out a life for herself, but returns to her village after tragedy strikes. Domnall Gleeson stars opposite Ronan as a potential love interest. He’s very charming in the role.

3. Gleeson shares the screen with Jude Law in Anna Karenina. The book centers on an affair between Anna and cavalry officer Vronsky. Law plays Karenin, Anna’s husband. Neither Gleeson or Law are part of my favorite scene–the dance between Anna and Vronsky–from this particular adaptation of Tolstoy’s novel.

4. Many years before Anna Karenina, Law starred in The Talented Mr. Ripley, a psychological thriller adapted from the book by Patricia Highsmith. Tom Ripley is enlisted to convince Dickie Greenleaf to return home but Ripley has other plans once becoming part of Greenleaf’s circle of friends. Cate Blanchett stars in a supporting role.

5. Blanchett is unforgettable as Lady Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings. Her voice is haunting as she narrates the opening scenes. The book is an epic high fantasy that follows several individuals trying to save Middle Earth from domination by Dark Lord Sauron by destroying “the one ring.” Sean Bean as Boromir learns too late of the dangers it brings.

6. Bean helps wrap up this month’s #6Degrees with his co-starring role in the adaptation of Tom Clancy’s Patriot Games. The novel is a thriller about ex-Marine and CIA analyst Jack Ryan who saves royals from a terrorist attack. His family becomes the target of the enemies he makes from the incident. Who plays Jack Ryan in the 1992 adaptation? Harrison Ford.

ENDING BOOK: Patriot Games by Tom Clancy

It’s difficult to think of Carrie Fisher without also invoking Star Wars. As many know, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher star in the original trilogy (Episodes 4-6). With that, our loop is complete. It was both fun and difficult looking for co-star links with movie adaptations of books. Thank goodness for Domnall Gleeson and Cate Blanchett!

  2. Superb, I love how you have drawn the connection through movie adaptations. Streep is one of my favorite actresses, and all of these (other than Patriot Games, which I still have to watch) are a few of my favorite movies.

  6. A great chain with a clever premise. I thought Brooklyn was one of the few books I have read where both film and book were of equal interest. Usually I prefer one – or the other (usually the book).

    1. Thanks! Maybe I will have to try reading it too then. I usually prefer one or the other as well.

  7. I love your chain, a really interesting way to link the books.

Meryl Streep is such a wonderful actress; I very much enjoyed the recent(ish) Little Women film (and I too read, re-read and cried over the book as a child.) I appreciated the way in which the film gave Amy more air time, instead of everything being solely about Jo, but Saoirse Ronan is of course fantastic too. I haven’t read Brooklyn, but I have just this weekend bought the DVD of the film from a charity shop (both of my daughters have recommended it very highly). I listened to Colm Toibin’s Nora Webster on BBC Sounds and thought it was brilliant (and the equally brilliant Siobhan McSweeney played Nora) so I’m very hopeful for Brooklyn.

I’ve been listening to a lot of audiobooks and dramatisations on BBC Sounds recently – one of these was Anna Karenina, which I’d never read. I loved it, and now I’m keen to see the film, and especially the dance scene you mention.

Cate Blanchett must be one of my very favourite actors. I must have heard her in Lord of the Rings, as my son was obsessed with it when he was at school, but I don’t remember that bit (I must admit I tried to avoid watching it… ) The film of hers that really bowled me over was Carol (which is of course based on Highsmith’s The Price of Salt!) She was incandescent.

So much to think about in your chain.

    1. Thanks for checking it out! Your daughters have great taste! I hope you enjoy watching Brooklyn once you get a chance to view it.
Yes, I completely agree with you about Cate Blanchett’s role in Carol. She was wonderful in it. I didn’t realize it was based on a book! Thanks for letting me know.
