Let’s Talk Bookish: Rereading books?

Prompts:  How many times is enough? Why re-read at all? Is re-reading just a comforting pastime? Or is there excitement to be relived? What kind of books do you re-read? Do you ever re-read books you don’t like in hopes that it will be better the second time? Were there any books you didn’t like as a child but liked as an adult, or vice versa? (Fives @ Down the Rabbit Hole)

I am a serial rereader. I rereads parts and I reread whole books. I read for the first time then I reread twice after. There is also a book I’ve reread almost yearly since I first picked it up. How many times is enough? There is no set number. “Enough” is dependent on the reader.

I mostly reread books I love and sometimes I also reread books that, for some reason, I can’t seem to get out of my mind. I also realized a year or so ago that rereading wasn’t just about how much I loved a book. It also brought me comfort. It is nice to know what is going to happen or to discover new things about a book I enjoyed. I also tend to reread when the next book is coming out and I’ve forgotten what happened in the last book.

I have tried to reread books I didn’t like in hopes it will be better the second time around. This requires that there be at least something that caught my attention in the first place. For some of these books, the second time worked like a charm. Sometimes rereading also backfires. I reread a book I loved only to find that it’s not as good as I remembered it. I hate when this happens! It makes me wish I hadn’t read it the second time.

What about you? What are you thoughts about this? Are you a rereader too? Or, are you strictly one and done?

Can definitely relate to the fact that sometimes rereading really dispels the intrigue of the first time, and I’ve definitely had that experience myself. Great post!

  2. I don’t reread nearly as much as I’d like these days, but I’m very picky about what I reread anyways. There are some books I’ve found myself enjoying over and over and others where my interest in them seems to peter out after a few rereads. Mostly, I have such a strong attachment to the first time I read a book (all the emotion, the surprise, the delight of discovering everything for the first time) that I just can’t bring myself to reread certain books and potentially overwrite those memories I cherish so much. On the other hand, I’m hoping to get back into rereading this year because that feeling of comfort is really like a cozy blanket!

    1. You’re completely right! It is like a cozy blanket! I also understand what you mean about the first time. There’s a few that I haven’t had the courage to reread because the first time was just too good.

  3. I love rereading books! Sometimes you catch something you missed the first time. I’ve read some books too many times to count – those are the ones that are my comfort reads and get me out of reading slumps.

  4. I used to re read a lot more than I do now. So many new books out. But, it’s so comforting to re read the great ones!

    1. I haven’t been able to reread as much lately either, because this year has been just one good book after the other.

  5. One and done here – except for Catch-22 – I’ve read that one three times!

    1. Catch-22 sounds like it must be a special book then. 🙂

      1. Very funny, and very sad. Also, very complicated, so I needed to read it a few times to catch everything.

  6. Before I became a blogger I reread books all the time, now when I think about rereading it feels so hard to fit in with my tbr and “obligated” reads so I can write posts. I want to get to a point where I can comfortably reread books without experiencing this guilt because I miss my old favorites

    1. I understand how you feel! Blogging has opened up the door to so many new books but it can make less room for favorites. 😦 I hope you get to reread some soon!

    1. Sometimes…I feel like I reread to avoid my TBR. LOL. I definitely get you’re saying though. There are just soooo many books we still have to read it.
