Let’s Talk Bookish: Changing Book Ratings/Reviews

Prompts:  Do you ever change your rating/review for a book? When or why would you consider doing so? Do you think people should be allowed to change their ratings/reviews? Is it important to make it known what the previous rating/review was if you’re changing it? (Nicole @ Thoughts Stained with Ink)

I have changed a rating/review for a book. I sometimes find myself stuck between one rating or another. It’s possible I was unsure and wanted to stick to a rating. Other times, it’s because I reread a book and my views or feelings about it changed. I often like to note the change because it helps me remember why I made the changes.

People should be allowed to change their ratings/reviews. We grow and change as individuals. It makes sense we should also change how we feel or think about the books we’ve read. Some books I loved when I was younger do not necessarily hit the same way. Similarly, it’s entirely possible that a book I read a few months ago will not necessarily be viewed the same way. Who we are today might not necessarily be who we are tomorrow. Things can change from one minute to the next. Ratings and reviews can be made to reflect those changes. Additionally, whether someone wants to make it known that changes have been made to a rating/review remains entirely up to them.

What about you? What are you thoughts about this? Have you changed your ratings/review of a book?

  1. I agree, as long as you’re not changing it because of pressure from someone. It’s fine, IMO.

    1. I definitely agree with what you said. I’ve heard some stories from the book community about pressure to change reviews and the reviewer essentially having to be firm.

  2. i don’t tend to change my reviews (occasionally, i’ll add an afterthought or something). i do change my ratings though! and i do it fairly regularly.

when i review and rate a book, i usually do it a few weeks after reading it (as i like to let me thoughts stew before coming to a decision). when i change my ratings, it’s usually because my thoughts continued to stew OR because i read someone else’s review that presented me with something i hadn’t considered before (good or bad).
