Discussion: If I could give books as gifts

10

Have you ever perused through books or been in the middle of a conversation and thought, “Oh my gosh! This is a book this person would enjoy”?

One of my fantasies as a reader is that my friends and family would all requests books as gifts. When they received a book, they would jump for joy like I do. Hahaha. Alas, they don’t ever request books. Of all the reader fantasies I have (heh…), this is one that tops my list when gift giving season comes around. No lie, it’s in my top ten. Someone tell me they have this dream too! Hahaha

I have a huge family and only a few close friends, so I chose some individuals who don’t normally read or haven’t had time to read and picked books I think they would enjoy. In an alternate world, this is what I’d be able to give them for Christmas (or any gift giving occasion really).

MOM
My mom and I are similar in the romance department. I think she’s as much a hopeless romantic as I am. She also loves her Thai lakorns a lot, preferring dramas to comedies. I think she’d enjoy the familiar plotlines of the two books below.
Book I’d Gift: Dating Makes Perfect by Pintip Dunn or Unveiled by Courtney Milan

BROTHER
He’s always working and I have no idea when it was that I last saw him pick up a book. He likes drama and period films. His favorites movies include Braveheart, The Last of the Mohicans, and Shogun’s Ninja. I know favorite movie genres do not always translate into favorite book genres, but I think the these two trilogies would have him reading more.
Book I’d Gift: The Poppy War Trilogy by R.F. Kuang or The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee

NIECE
She’s mature for her age and already has a distinct voice and style. She is also a huge BTS fan. What better books to read than ones where the dreams of KPOP fans could come true?
Book I’d Gift: XOXO by Axie Oh or I’ll Be The One by Lyla Lee

NEPHEW
He loves Pokemon and is always playing games or watching other people play games whenever I see him. Maybe he would enjoy reading about people playing games too? Heh…
Book I’d Gift: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline or Last Gamer Standing by Katie Zhao

PARTNER
He’s a fan of comedies and enjoys watching chick flicks with me as long as they’re funny. I made him watch the trailer for The Lost City of Z. From the smile on his face, I know he’d be willing to sit down long enough to watch it with me, even if he won’t admit it. We might enjoy some of the same books if only he liked to read…
Book I’d Gift: Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Sutanto or Rockaway Bride by Pippa Grant

BFF MINDY
My bff reads but she hasn’t picked up a book in a while. She hasn’t had time to read much. She loves princesses and enjoys fairy tales. For her, I think a retelling would be great, especially something on the shorter side if possible.
Book I’d Gift: Ember by Bettie Sharpe or Gilded by Marissa Meyer

BFF ANA
My other bff likes to buy books (and loves pretty covers) but hasn’t had time to sit down and read them. She also loves BTS. We like a lot of the same things and genres (fantasy, paranormal). We both adore Pride and Prejudice movies and shows, but she’s never read it! (My poor heart!) She’s hard to pick for because generally liking the same things doesn’t always we mean we like the exact same thing. I’d give her some Jane Austen but I’ve already given her a few of them. Ha!
Book I’d Gift: Somewhere Only We Know by Maureen Goo or Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (UK Cover)

In your alternate world where friends and family also wanted books as gifts, what books would you give them?
