Let’s Talk Bookish: Updating Old Content

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion. Discussions pertain to topics related to reading or books. Share your opinions, and spread the love by visiting other “Let’s Talk Bookish” posts.

Prompts:  Do you ever go back and update older content on your blog? For instance, after getting new graphics or going self-hosted? Why or why not? Do you sometimes curate/clear out old posts that you no longer want published, or rewrite/update them? Do you think people should periodically clean up their old content and update/delete things that don’t align with their current positions/beliefs? (Nicole @ Thoughts Stained with Ink)

My most recent update was the beginning of this year. I decided to change the general image template I have for what WordPress calls the featured image. Because I didn’t have too many posts, it was easy to replace them. Also, I wanted it to look uniform.

I generally do not rewrite entire posts. If I do updates to a review or want to include something related to the book, I like to put notes at the bottom of the review. I try to date it as well. For instance, after posting my review of Gone to the Woods, I attended an author event and wanted to include a note about it.

It’s really up to the blogger if they want to clean up their content. Sometimes it might be nice to keep it as is and just make a note of changes. This allows individuals to revisit and contemplate what has changed and why. It’s interesting to see how my reviews have changed in the span of nearly two years.

When it comes to something they no longer want published, by all means feel free to remove the content.

Do you like to review your old content? When you make changes to your blog, do you update old content to align with your changes? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

  1. Great topic! Some people frown on it, but I have no idea why. I’ve gone back and edited reviews just to spiff up the writing, but not actually change a rating. Personally, I believe we should be able to do whatever we want with our blogs. 👍

  2. I just changed my theme and updated the posts for the past 2 weeks, and I thought that was enough. I don’t ever go back and change content, mostly because, it’s a lot of work, and I doubt anyone goes back and looks at my old posts anyway.

    1. You’re super prolific. (You’re amazing by the way and super organized.) I don’t think I would have changed as far back if had as many posts as you do.

  3. I love that idea of including notes on what you think now in old posts instead of actually editing the post itself. It’s almost like a time-capsule of sorts that you can look back at later to see how your thoughts changed with time. Wow, that’s such a great idea; I really loved reading this!

    1. Thanks! It’s especially fun to look at when the next book in a series is coming up. I’ve referenced the notes and thought…what was I thinking. Ha…
