Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Run for Your Honey had the potential to be my favorite book in the series. It’s a second-chance romance between two people who never got over each other and are now going head-to-head in a mayoral election. It promised to be a mix of politics and romance, and I was excited. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations.

As soon as Duke showed up and Poppy’s anger rose to the surface, I was committed to the story. Breakups can be difficult to get over, and I immediately sympathized with Poppy after discovering how their relationship ended. Also, it was easy to be on her side after getting to know her over the series. She didn’t need as much fleshing out as Duke did.

Duke is easy to dislike because it’s obvious he is running only to kickstart his political career. After discovering his feelings for Poppy, I succumbed to the difficult task of letting some of my dislike go–maybe there was hope for him yet. However, I couldn’t completely let go because the exploration of his character backstory and motivations was somewhat lacking.  

I enjoyed the first few chapters of the book, but just as the story started to fall into place, it suddenly jumped five steps ahead. The tension between Poppy and Duke was still in its nascent stages when their emotions overtook them. It was difficult for me to accept this because the momentum building up to this inevitable moment was missing. Where was the internal battle against their chemistry? From then on, the story moved quickly without sufficient time spent on the political campaigns and the subplots involving their families. I was especially disappointed with the small amount of time given to Mama Blum.

Poppy and Duke’s romance was one I looked forward to, but the path to their HEA did not pan out the way I hoped. Multiple moments throughout the book showcased how great their story could have been, and that’s what became one of the most upsetting things to me. If it had been longer, maybe the book may have reached its potential, and maybe it would have become my favorite book of the series.
