I discovered Australian band The Paper Kites last year. Where have they been all my life? They fall under alternative/indie rock but for me they fall into the “best bands to listen to when driving at night” category. They provided a lot of stress relief when I needed it most. In March, they released a new album, Roses. Rather than sharing my favorite song, “Don’t Keep Driving” (kind of funny considering the category they fall into for me…hehehe), I thought I’d share the song I listen to most from the new album. “Crossfire” is a soulful ballad that features Amanda Bergman. Here’s an article about the album from Broadway World.
Could I be one for you? / If you’re the one for me
The Knockout Rule caught me by surprise, and I loved it. I have so many highlights throughout the book because I loved the poetry that flowed freely from Eric. I liked the chemistry between the two leads, even if it was first fueled by lust. They’re both attracted to each other but there are different barriers in the way so it fits well that the leads feel their connection but are unsure of how the other feels. (Review)
Released in 2015, Sara Barielles wrote this song for the musical Waitress, which is based on the movie of the same name. The song is one of self-reflection, mourning for her current situation and who she used to be but also hopeful that maybe she can find herself again. It’s such a heart wrenching song, perfect for those moments when you’re feeling a little lost.
‘Til it finally reminds her / To fight just a little To bring back the fire in her eyes / that’s been gone but it used to be mine
Here’s another book you may see showing up here and there. I apologize in advance. I love the leads in this with their insecurities, their vulnerabilities, and how much they become to each other without even realizing it. It’s a slow read and most of it takes place in a shared hospital room with lots of self-reflection. It’s so good. Houghton wrote such a beautiful novel. (Review)
I’ve liked a few things from Marshmello but the Jonas Brothers have never really hit the mark for me…until now. Who knew I would like this collaboration so much? Certainly not me. This is the first track of my summer playlist. I’ve had this one on repeat for a while. It’s a fun bop with an 80’s beat. The beginning actually sounds a little like it samples Barry Manilow’s Smile.
A CO-AUTHORED BOOK I LiKED
The pairing could have gone a few ways but I wanted to highlight a co-authored book I liked. M.A. Carrick is the penname for Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms. Individuals who met on an archaeological dig and have remained friends for over two decades. The Mask of Mirrors is a tome at over 600 pages but it’s well worth the read if you’re a fan of fake identities and political intrigue. (Review)
